I write in reference to a publication on Vanguard Newspaper of 04/07/2013 about a young man who had a brush with a moving train at airport bus stop Ikeja Along.
The young man in this case is a post graduate student of University of Lagos, studying Geographic Information System. He was going to the Police Pension Commission in Ikeja to pursue his late father's pension benefits when he met his untimely death. He is named Austin Abi, from Adikpo in Benue State. He lived at 14 Fatai Street Egbeda, Lagos.
He was a very calm and focused person, articulate and too sound for certain uncivilized behaviors, like listening to earphone while walking on the street; even on a high way as busy as Ikeja Along.
The information posted on Vanguard Newspaper and which was collaborated by other online posts and radio presenter (YO YO) that he had earphones on his two ears was totally wrong and misleading.
Something else might have happened because the said earphones was not seen by one Mr Shedrach who accompanied him on the journey.
And at no point was he seen with earphone that day. His sister who bade him goodbye did not notice any ear phone with him. And at no point did he stop to buy one along the road.
I remember I saw him barely two hours before the incident occured at Dopemu Roundabout by Sweet Sensation and i did not notice the said earphone. How he mysteriously wore earphone before he was hit by the train is still a surprise to all of us.
When he was rushed to the hospital there was no experienced doctor on ground to immediately attend to him. All we saw were student doctors because Lagos State Resident doctors were on 3 days warning strike.
Austin could have been saved if we have a robust health care system. He was alive for about three hours after the accident but was not given proper medical attention. Instead we were being asked to pay for this form or buy that card before they would attend to him.
He died at exactly 5:00 pm and was moved to TOS mortuary within the hospital premises .
He was buried on 1st July 2013 at his home town in Benue State.
He will be remembered for his calmness, caring, and perfect friendly dispositions. He was once a departmental president in the department of Geography and Meteorology, Enugu State Univeristy of Science and Technology, Enugu .
We pray God to save us from the evils the that walk in the day. To console the family of Abi for this great loss.
Adieu Abi Austin!!!
